Re-evaluating Soy

Yuthica-Fireplace.smallerMy prior experience with soy candles was not positive.  It was my belief that while soy was better environmentally, the produced fragrance and overall quality of such candles were not up to par. Disappointment led to mistrust.  And someone please tell me why some candles cost the equivalent of a swanky meal?

Then, new company Yuthica came along to help me regain my trust.  This line’s candles are hand made in North Andover, Massachusetts by founder Chinku Mahindra. The travel candles are $12, the 8 oz Glass Candle is $16, and the Double Dipp candle is $30. They are available in select stores or online.

When asked details about soy candles and the benefits, Chinku told me: “Soy candles produce 95% less soot than paraffin candles. Soy wax does not pollute the air. Paraffin candles release a petro-carbon soot that can coat walls and furniture. Soy candles also last about 40-50% longer than paraffin candles.”

The other interesting part about her line is that the Double Dipp is a lotion candle.  If you didn’t know what it that is, you aren’t alone.  It burns like a candle and you also use some of the hot liquid to moisturize your body. An unexpected 2-for-1 deal.  The inevitable softness of your skin can be attributed to the avocado oil, cocoa butter, and shea butter she uses.

As last minute holiday preparations (such as gift wrapping and card organization) are being done by me, the burning candle’s scent is just strong enough to fill the living room.  It is my belief that living spaces in Boston proper can smell like old wood and something else semi nasty at times no matter how clean you keep the place and air it out.  So, masking the odor artificially is a permanent pastime of mine.  This is usually accomplished by using room spray.

Yuthica mimosa.smallerWhen asked what was the catalyst for starting Yuthica, Chinku shared, “Last year I began making candles for fun, one thing led to another and before I knew it I was making holiday gifts! they were received well and the response I got was overwhelming! I next sold a few on consignment at a local gift store ..that did well too.  The mixing and blending of fragrances fascinated me - the process easy to do but sooo very hard to perfect. So many different permutations and combinations that I actually at times felt like the mad scientist! But it was fun, invigorating and so exciting - when the right fragrance came to life it lit up my space! It took a while but finally it all did come together and Yuthica was born! Its when I had to order my boxes and the quantities were large that I really realized that I am now in the candle business!!!

But the best part about this company? 10% of sales go to the Nanhi Kali Education fund, which provides opportunities for girls.  By providing academic and financial assistance to girls in India that otherwise would not be able to finish high school. It is important for us as consumers to support companies that give back to the larger global community we are all a part of.
